If you have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro, you can't update the OS. To update, you need a MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or later) Model 6.2 and higher.
Security on older systems is not as huge a deal on El Capitan and up becoming obsolete, although Safari is not being updated. Use Firefox or Chrome while they are El Capitan compatible for better security on El Capitan. Malwarebytes is compatible El Capitan, and so is Avast. You can remove Malwarebytes while not in using using Piriform Cleaner. Apx driver.

If you are careful about what you download and where you search on the Internet, your computer is useable without the latest security updates. My last computer had a 10.6 partition which I used every night. That was after El Capitan was released, so the OS was 5 versions behind. By being careful, I never had any problems.
I would make sure that you had at least 2 separate backups on 2 separate drives in case you have problems. That will allow you to recover.

I read somewhere that it is possible to install the latest version of OSX 10.10 Yosemite on my Mac, even though the official installer refuses to install.

Installing newer versions of OSX on slightly older Macs that do not meet the official system requirements can be done using MacPostFactor (MCPF).
MacPostFactor also supports installing OSX versions up to OSX 10.10 Yosemite on older Macs. And a new version that supports installing OSX 10.11 El_Capitan is in the works.
