I used better videophone software in 1999. Same old junk.

Neat interface but there are lots of missing multimedia features by my opinion. For example brightness adjustment and one way audio or video chat.
For 'simple' chatting for macs I'd rather prefer Fire (http://fire.sourceforge.net/)

Sheesh - another 'APE' (application enhancer) item. Can't we all just get along and get rid of the whole APE system!!! Nothing but trouble!!!!!

I tried this and it does work as advertised. Also the iChatUSB software allows it to work on a G3 below 600 mHz. In my case a G3/350.
After using this I can see why Apple set the minimum requirements they did. But I'm quite impressed it worked at all, and came away with a macam driver for a previously unsupported camera.

Wow, this works. They only catch was I had to reboot my machine, and then enable the camera in iChat (under the video menu).
I've got this working with a PenCam ($5 from eBay) and a PB G3500.
The real test comes later when I can try it with my father.

works great with my philips to-u-cam, but the microphone is deactivated. does anybody have the same problem?

Ichat For Android

I get this sometimes.
If you're getting it all the time it might be something you need to change in your sound preferences
Windows

Followed the instructions. iChat crashed every time I started it up. Went to prefferences and unchecked 'Open iChat when camera is turned on' which seemed to fix the problem (must have conflicted with iPhotos desire to do the same).

I am using a quickCam Pro, but ichat AV is not recognizing it. MacCam recognizes it just fine. Any idea what might be amiss? The APE was already installed before i started any of my attempt to get video chat going.

After installing APE and iChatUSBCam my Aiptek Mini Pencam 1.3 works with iChat AV. I have the macam driver installed as well.
I connected with someone who used Apple's camera. They were on DSL, and I'm on Cable. They noticed that my frame rate was very low - the picture they received from me was not smooth. I had no problems receiving their picture.
Sound was fine both ways, I used an old Apple PlainTalk mic attached to my Power Mac G4/400.
All in all it was a very positive experience. Since I already own the camera I'm into videoconferencing for no additional cost. The Aiptek makes a nice little 'second camera' if you have OS X and use the macam drivers.

This tip worked for me as written with one catch: I needed to reboot after installing the iChatUSBCam software to get iChat AV to properly display the video input.

Awesome... works great with a Creative NX Pro leftover from my PC. Thanks for the tip.

I have 10.4.9 on a powerbook G3 400MHz (firewire) and didn't need the APE... I just installed macam and iChatUSBCam and my webcam worked just fine. Webcam is one of the old che-ez snap pencams I just happened to find in some old pc parts boxes.
The webcam itself is slow and choppy even plugged into a USB 2.0 slot, and if I remember right it didnt run that great when it was new with the drivers that came with it. iChat recognized the camera and showed vid on my end but, I had nobody in my friends list that was online to test the broadcast quality.
basically if you are using an old usb camera chances are the video will be choppy as the cameras themselves weren't as advanced then as they are now.
iChatUSBCam has a 7 day free demo version so you aren't obligated until you know for sure that it will work for you.
